iPhone eSIM Setup: How to Add and Switch eSIM Plans in 2026

By Chester Takau · July 2026

TL;DR

  • Settings → Mobile Service → Add eSIM → scan QR or enter details manually
  • iPhone 14 US models have no physical SIM slot — eSIM only
  • You can store multiple eSIMs but only two active at once
  • Switch active plans in Settings → Mobile Service anytime

Setting up an eSIM on iPhone is straightforward once you know where to look. The interface has been stable since iOS 16 and the steps below apply to iPhone XS and later — which covers nearly every iPhone still in active use.

Step 1: Check your iPhone is eSIM-compatible and unlocked

Go to Settings → General → About and scroll to find "Available SIM" or "Digital SIM" in the list. If it is there, your phone supports eSIM. All iPhones from XS (2018) onward do. If you bought your phone from a carrier on a contract, it may be locked — contact your carrier or check the unlock status in Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock.

Step 2: Get the eSIM QR code or activation details from your provider

Your eSIM provider (Airalo, Holafly, your local carrier) will send an email with either a QR code or a SM-DP+ address and activation code. Do not scan the QR code on the same phone — you need a second device to display it, or use the manual entry option. Save the email somewhere accessible before you start.

Step 3: Add the eSIM

  1. Go to Settings → Mobile Service (or Cellular on US devices)
  2. Tap Add eSIM
  3. Choose Use QR Code and point your camera at the QR code on a second screen, OR tap Enter Details Manually
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts — the profile downloads in 15–60 seconds
  5. Name your eSIM (e.g. "Travel Asia", "Work", "Home") when prompted

Step 4: Set which lines do what

After adding the eSIM, iOS asks which line to use for calls, SMS, and mobile data. For a travel eSIM alongside your home SIM, set data to the travel eSIM and keep calls/SMS on your home SIM for two-factor authentication texts. You can change these anytime in Settings → Mobile Service.

Switching between stored eSIMs

iPhone can store up to 20 eSIMs but only two can be active simultaneously. To switch, go to Settings → Mobile Service, tap the plan you want to activate, and toggle it on. The previous active eSIM turns off automatically if you are at the two-active limit. Switching takes a few seconds and the new plan connects without a restart.

Common problems and fixes

eSIM not activating:

  • Check you are on wifi — activation requires internet
  • Make sure the QR code has not already been scanned (most eSIMs are single-use)
  • Restart the phone and try again from Settings

No signal after activation:

  • Confirm data roaming is on for that line in Settings → Mobile Service
  • Check your plan covers the country you are in
  • Toggle airplane mode off and on to force a network scan
